clifton avenue

I still remember the day the new playground arrived. Gone was the rusty metal I spent many days on, replaced by a plastic jungle. Before we began playing, Jimmy loudly announced the stench coming from the new mulch.

This candle is an ode to elementary school in the 90s filled with recess where we swung on jungle gyms, sat on swings, or ran in empty daisy-lined fields.

the night before thanksgiving

In Lakewood, Thanksgiving meant three things: bonfire, football, and food. Every year, on the night before Thanksgiving members of the town gathered to watch a yearly bonfire. The football team donned their letterman jackets to receive praise and good luck before the Thanksgiving game against South.

While the tradition has ended, this candle represents the smell of the fire and the warmth of small town care.

little league

In 1975, Lakewood became the first Jersey Shore town to win the Little League World Series. It is this legacy that made being on a little league team so appealing to kids and their families.

Kids drinking gatarode and blowing bubbles with their big chew gum filled the dugouts on the small field with bleachers that held a dozen or families. Win or lose, players would run to the concessions stands for cheap hotdogs and chips after the game.

family reunion

Every summer, near the border of Lakewood and Jackson, countless families gather, some with matching t-shirts, some with family-based talent shows, all with food on the grill and love in their hearts. Pine Park has been the location of many family reunions for the residents of Lakewood.

This candle is a mixture of the pine, for the trees surrounding the area, and citronella, for the lamps burned to keep mosquitos away. It will invite you into the summer days of fun and family.

nana's house

Three things that were consistent about the Sundays in my youth were church, candy, and good food. Most Sunday mornings, my grandmother would put on a pot of coffee, stirring in sugar and hazelnut creamer, before she would start our breakfast – usually bacon or sage sausage with biscuits and eggs. While we showered she laid out our Sunday outfits.

Often, we – my siblings, cousins, and I – were restless during the services that seemed to never end. My grandmother was a candy lady – always carrying around some small token of sweetness.  She would pass us each a piece of candy to keep us quiet. Our favorite, and her regular candy, was Werther's original hard candies. This candle is an ode to the Sunday mornings filled with love at Nana's house. It carries the scent of her coffee, her breakfast and her candy.
